A hybrid human-machine interface for hands-free control of an intelligent wheelchair

چکیده
This paper presents a novel hybrid human-machine interface (HMI) designed for hands-free control of electric powered wheelchairs. Both forehead electromyography (EMG) signals and colour face image information are deployed to identify winking and jaw clenching movements of human face. Five winking and jaw clenching movement patterns are selected and classified, mapping into six control commands to drive an electric powered wheelchair in an indoor environment. Six subjects participated in the experiments and the experimental results show that the proposed control scheme have potential applicability to accommodate various individual cases and achieve good performance.

Fusing EMG and Visual Data for Hands-Free Control of an Intelligent Wheelchair
This paper presents a novel hands-free human machine interface (HMI) for elderly and disabled people by fusing multi-modality bioinformation abstracted from forehead electromyography (EMG) signals and facial images of a user. The interface allows users to drive an electric-powered wheelchair using face movements such as jaw clenching and eye blinking. An indoor environment is set up for evaluat...
متن کاملHead movement and facial expression-based human-machine interface for controlling an intelligent wheelchair
This paper presents a human machine interface (HMI) for hands-free control of an electric powered wheelchair (EPW) based on head movements and facial expressions detected by using the gyroscope and ‘cognitiv suite’ of an Emotiv EPOC device, respectively. The proposed HMI provides two control modes: 1) control mode 1 uses four head movements to display in its graphical user interface the control...
متن کاملMulti-modality - EMG and Visual Based Hands-Free Control of an Intelligent Wheelchair
This paper presents a novel human machine interface for people with severe disabilities to control an electric powered wheelchair using face movements. Five face movements including jaw clenching and eye closing movements are identified by extracting movement features from both forehead Electromyography (EMG) signal and facial image information. A real-world indoor environment is setup for eval...
متن کاملRobust Bio-Signal Based Control of an Intelligent Wheelchair
In this paper, an adaptive human-machine interaction (HMI) method that is based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals is proposed for the hands-free control of an intelligent wheelchair. sEMG signals generated by the facial movements are obtained by a convenient dry electrodes sensing device. After the signals features are extracted from the autoregressive model, control data samples are u...
متن کاملHead gesture recognition for hands-free control of an intelligent wheelchair
Purpose – This paper presents a novel hands-free control system for intelligent wheelchairs (IWs) based on visual recognition of head gestures. Design/methodology/approach – A robust head gesture-based interface (HGI), is designed for head gesture recognition of the RoboChair user. The recognised gestures are used to generate motion control commands to the low-level DSP motion controller so tha...
